fia gets a butterfly net

In December, Sofia got her big girl bed. She was so proud, but every night ended up in mommy-daddy bed. So, mommy made a deal with Sofia that when she slept in her own bed for 5 nights in a row, the fairies would bring her a butterfly net to catch her good dreams. Well, it finally happened, and here are the results! Enjoy the video!

snow day!

It's a snow day today... it started out with me waking up, thinking, "ah, it's not bad out there, maybe we should go to the Butterfly Pavilion just to say we got out today." Then, as the snow started, I thought, "well, maybe just a quick workout at the gym. It's closer, it's fast." Now, we're in for the day, and I'm thinking of all the things I could do with the day. Of course doing them depends completely on Sofia's mood and Emmo letting me walk away from him for a few minutes! Here's my list:

- make pancakes (Fia's priority!)
- finish Fia's knitted bunny rabbit
- hem my jeans (a real undertaking since I've never hemmed anything in my life!)
- make cookies
- clean out Fia's closet (her pants have all become high-waters all of a sudden!)
- make play-dough
- take pictures of the baby things I'm going to sell on craigslist
- read The Middle Place for bookclub
- sew hats for birthday gifts
- catch up (and maybe get ahead) on the laundry
- clean out the basement

emmo stands

Emerson pulled himself up today for the first time! He did it in the bath tub of all places, but he was so proud!

I haven't yet taken his 8 month picture... need to do that before he's 9 months old!e

tinkerbell

At bedtime:

Sofia: I can't sleep very well. I need my teddy bear.
Me: OK
Sofia: No, mom, wait! I need Tinkerbell the doggie, Tinkerbell the bear, Tinkerbell the baby, Tinkerbell Mitchell, and Madeline.
Me: [sigh] OK

Sofia at three-and-a-half

As you all know, Sofia is definitely her own person. She is always 2 steps ahead, and once her mind is set, well, there's no bending!

They speak of the "terrible two's". Well, two was easy compared to the three's for Sofia! The hardest time was about September through February. Finally, as she edges closer to 4, I think she is getting easier to work with.

Two steps ahead, for example:
1) We're having lunch with someone. I say, "Sofia, can you be polite and smile, and say hi to this person?" Sofia says, "Well, maybe, if I'm a good girl. But if I'm a naughty girl, then I won't."
Or
2) At dinner, I had to walk away from the table for a moment, and came back to Fia feeding Emmo. I said, " Fia, that is so helpful!" She responded with , "I can be helpful when you use nice words!"

So you can see how the usual tactics can fall flat with Sofia!

This past weekend we were in Wichita, and Sofia was testing just about every boundary. With my mom she was fine, having fun, but as soon as I stepped in, she acted up and ended up in a time-out! It's such a bummer to have to put her in time-out, but I often just don't know how else to deal with her behavior. Today, our first day back to Denver, she tested again every limit, and even seemingly decided on a power-struggle with me over her lunch! Luckily, Kent was ready to take a lunch-break in the middle of that, and he was able to get her out of that funk!

In general, though, the last month has been MUCH easier with Sofia. As she gets closer to 4, she does seem to be more reasonable, and more able to let things go, such as when I flush the toilet when she wanted to, and I say, "Oh, well, you can flush next time." and she surprisingly accepts it!

fia's rating scale

Sofia had been learning numbers, and is feeling very powerful with applying them to just about everything! At the beginning of the school year, 4 was a lot, then 5, and now 6! Lately, she'll say "It was a LOT, like 60/20 a lot!" Even more is 60/30, such as in "I was happy, like 60/30 happy!" (No, she has not learned fractions yet...)

very a lot 4

We just returned from a trip to Wichita, and for some reason Sofia decided that she would be 4 when we returned. Here is our conversation this morning:

Fia: Today's my Birthday!
Me: Honey, your Birthday will happen when we get back from Germany. But, you are very almost 4!
Fia: I know that. But I passed 4.
Me: So what will you be on your Birthday then?
Fia: 5. I'm getting faster and faster to the disaster!
